SNAPSHOTS of Mower Refreshed: From an Interns Lens

3-1Family Dinners

Do you think sitting down and having a family dinner together is important? I believe family dinners are important, that is why I was excited to have hosted the first Family Kitchen Connection event. According to Harvard Research, “family dinners are more important than play, story time, and other family events in the development of vocabulary of younger children.” Frequent family meals are also associated with a lower risk of smoking, drinking, and using drugs, as well as lower incidence of depression and suicidal thoughts with children 11 to 18 years old (Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, 2004). Those are just a few benefits of sharing family meals together.

The initial inspiration for this Family Kitchen Connection event came from the previous summer intern at Mower Refreshed. By 3-2analyzing existing public health research and conducting surveys throughout the community, we discovered that families wanted to learn how to cook healthy American and ethnic style dishes, as well as being knowledgeable on the benefits of cooking as a family. Hence, the idea of bringing families together through cooking healthy dishes.

I am particularly passionate over this event because I love food and cooking healthy food that doesn’t take hours to prepare. This passion is the reason why I am in the health field. Public Health allows me to help people live healthier, work with them on a personal level, and impact my community through prevention. My hope is to impact individuals and families through this program by showing them how to make easy, healthy dinners, build community relationships, and discuss the importance of eating as a family.

It was so much fun seeing families of different ethnicities from the community come together to cook a healthy dinner. Everyone had a good time connecting with community members and meeting new friends!

Here are a few quotes from participants:
 “Today I learned how to work with my family.”
 “Today I learned that healthy food can be tasty.”
 “My favorite part of the event was the relaxed atmosphere and teamwork.”
 “My favorite part of the event was being able to work together and make delicious food.”

Thank you to all those who helped make this event possible and to the families who were able to make it! 🙂
