Mower County Rental Properties Get Help Going Smoke Free

Since 2014, the American Lung Association (ALA) of MN has worked with Mower County rental properties to become smoke free. SHIP Mower County is currently contracting with the American Lung Association to promote, encourage, and directly assist property owners and managers toward smoke-free spaces.

As we all know, smoking and tobacco use/exposure are directly related to chronic diseases. Reducing smoking within an apartment complex is a great way to decrease tobacco use and exposure for all the residents living there. Because as much as 60 percent of air in a multi-unit building is shared, smoking cannot be contained to just one apartment; eventually many tenants will inhale some secondhand smoke.

During the last grant cycle of the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP), American Lung Association assisted two rental properties in smoke-free housing accomplishments, thus reducing the exposure for many people in Mower County. Through SHIP and ALA’s efforts, we hope to improve the air quality and overall health of rental housing tenants. But, going smoke free has many benefits for property owners as well; transitioning a smoking apartment costs approximately 3 times more when compared to a non-smoking apartment. These costs can include; paint, flooring, outlets, walls, etc.

Looking ahead, the American Lung Association will continue to partner with rental property owners and managers, providing support and direct assistance in obtaining their smoke-free housing goals.
