It’s time to say goodbye…

Time flies when you’re having a good time. It’s time for me to say goodbye to Mower Refreshed. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to intern with such a great organization and to be under the supervision of Sandy Anderson! Thank you for showing me such strength and perseverance in becoming independent and competent in community engagement. I also want to thank everyone who has helped me gain the confidence and skills to do more good wherever I go next.

3-1Family Dinners

Do you think sitting down and having a family dinner together is important? I believe family dinners are important, that is why I was excited to have hosted the first Family Kitchen Connection event. According to Harvard Research, “family dinners are more important than play, story time, and other family events in the development of vocabulary of younger children.” Frequent family meals are also associated with a lower risk of smoking, drinking, and using drugs, as well as lower incidence of depression and suicidal thoughts with children 11 to 18 years old (Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, 2004). Those are just a few benefits of sharing family meals together.

MowerRefreshedHeartProgram Planning
Week Two

It’s been four weeks here in Austin, MN and I am liking it! Over these last few weeks I was able to connect with many different individuals from different organizations. I feel so welcomed and appreciate everyone who took time out of their busy schedule to meet with me.

What have I been up to these last couple of weeks? Well, I have been working on a pilot program called Family Kitchen Connection where two English speaking families and two non-English speaking families come together to cook a healthy American or ethnic style dish. Afterwards they will eat the meal together and converse on the importance of cooking and eating as a family. The goal of this pilot program is to build connections and relationships within the community, as well as learn about local resources on where to buy healthy affordable foods, and build healthy families by preparing a meal and eating as a family.

MowerRefreshedHeartWeek One

Introduction

Hello! I’m Kari, the summer intern at Mower Refreshed (M.R.). I am excited to share my journey as an intern and a newcomer to Austin, MN with you this summer! I will be providing biweekly posts and snapshots of my experience here in Austin. I hope you enjoy my blog!

Here is a little about myself, I am a recent graduate at Winona State University where I majored in Public Health with an emphasis on Community Health and a minor in Chinese. I have always been interested in health, but my passion for health started in college. I was exposed to the many different avenues of health, but I choose Public Health because I am able to make small differences in whole communities through prevention.
