Thriving in the Trenches

Saturday, December 17th, 2016

img_1792In a room with over one hundred and eighty professionals, from a variety of fields, that work with people are asked this question: “How many of you received training in primary, secondary, or vicarious trauma in preparation for your career?”
Not a hand raised.

That’s a problem. Through a refreshed lens, it’s reframed by Mower Refreshed and our community partners as an opportunity. An opportunity to gather at the table and share collective wisdom on how to engage, equip and empower the folks in our communities doing the front-line work. An opportunity to say “Yes” to creating meaningful responses to those serving in challenging careers, empowering them and seeking to decrease burn out. Engaging the folks doing the work that often involves experiencing or viewing trauma first hand or through hearing another’s story.

Thriving in the Trenches: Minimizing the Impact of Trauma Exposure

Friday, November 4th, 2016

MowerRefreshedHeartExposure to toxicity at work for most is not a daily risk, for others it’s part of the nature of the very work they do. Professionals who are exposed to human suffering, observing traumatic events or circumstances, supporting those who have experienced trauma, or possibly being faced with a trauma first hand are at especially high risk for negative impacts on both their professional work and personal life.

3-1Family Dinners

Do you think sitting down and having a family dinner together is important? I believe family dinners are important, that is why I was excited to have hosted the first Family Kitchen Connection event. According to Harvard Research, “family dinners are more important than play, story time, and other family events in the development of vocabulary of younger children.” Frequent family meals are also associated with a lower risk of smoking, drinking, and using drugs, as well as lower incidence of depression and suicidal thoughts with children 11 to 18 years old (Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, 2004). Those are just a few benefits of sharing family meals together.

Mower Refreshed is inviting you to Breathe Refreshed!

Monday, February 22nd, 2016

Breathe_Refreshed_CampaignMower Refreshed is committed to promoting and supporting tobacco-free living in Mower County. Why Breathe Refreshed? The health benefits are plentiful! There is no shortage of “No smoking” and stop smoking signs and promotions. This campaign is focused on the gains of creating a new life habit vs what those who currently smoke would lose if they quit.

We will be campaigning for our community to Breathe Refreshed this March.

The Breathe Refreshed campaign will take place Sunday, March 6th thru Saturday, March 19th. During that time period we will be showcasing local stories and local reasons to breathe refreshed, research results, and resources for community members who wish to take the first steps to living smoke free.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program will start a new class in March. The program is a lifestyle improvement program for adults with prediabetes led by Jill Wagner, a certified Lifestyle Coach.

The program’s purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
